A View of Kŭmgang Mountains from 1734 by Chŏng Sŏn (1676-1759), Hoam Gallery.

The M.St. in Korean Studies at Oxford aims:

  1. To build on a basic knowledge of modern Korean and classical Chinese or modern Japanese and ensure that the student becomes capable in using at least modern Korean for research purposes;
  2. To acquaint students with many of the most important classical texts from all periods of Korean history in modern Korean translation or the original classical Chinese, or to acquaint students with the major concerns and problems of contemporary Korean linguistics and train up students to competency in Old or Middle Korean;
  3. To enable students to understand and use a range of classical references and historiographical research methods for the treatment of pre-modern primary sources, or to acquaint students with a range of linguistic theories and methodologies that will enable them to begin independent linguistic research in Korean;
  4. To allow students to do more specialised study from a wide range of possible options and thereby exercise their new skills.
