Research Interests:

My main interests lie in the origins and development of the ancient Egyptian language, its relations with cognate (especially the Semitic) languages, and the investigation and comparison of the detailed structure of its various stages; my main concentration has been on its latest stages, Demotic and Coptic, i.e. from around the 7th century BC to the 13th century AD.

Current Projects:

  • edition of unpublished linguistic papers of Battiscombe Gunn
  • investigation of the grammar of early Demotic documents

  • 1st and 2nd year Middle Egyptian
  • Coptic (all levels)
  • others as required

Recent Publications:

  • 32 articles (16 revisions, 16 new) on Egyptologists and other orientalists for Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (2004)
