The BA in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Hebrew) deals primarily with languages and literature, with study of Jewish culture and history as the necessary background. The course lasts for three or four years, depending on whether you choose to spend a year abroad at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The primary aim of the course is to give all students a working knowledge of the main phases of the Hebrew language (classical, rabbinic and medieval, and modern), together with an introduction to the historical background and the most important literature of each period. The wide range of options available enables students to devote particular attention to any one of these areas if they so choose.

A BA in Jewish Studies is also available.

The Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies is in the Clarendon Institute on Walton Street, which also houses the Leopold Muller Memorial Library.

Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the field, teaching and research staff belong to various faculties, including Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Modern Languages and Literature, History, Theology, and Classics. The Centre sponsors a broad range of seminars, lectures and workshops each year, in addition to the Oxford Seminars in Advanced Jewish Studies, and welcomes visiting scholars from all over the world.

Two leading international journals in the field are based in Oxford: the Journal of Jewish Studies and the Journal of Modern Jewish Studies.

University faculty with an interest in Jewish Studies are to be found in many different faculties of the University and graduate students are engaged in a wide variety of resarch within the field.
