Alinda Damsma


Instructor in Biblical Hebrew

Dr Alinda Damsma is Instructor in Biblical Hebrew in the Faculty of Theology & Religion and the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Oxford. She received her Bachelor and Master of Divinity from the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam (2003) and her PhD from the department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies, University College London (2008). Her past publications focused on Aramaic, the Targums, and Jewish mysticism, and she is currently working on two monographs: a grammar of the Zohar, and a study on the perception of magic, divination, and witchcraft in the English Bible translations, particularly the King James Version and its predecessors, and their impact on the early modern witch-hunts.

Research Interests:
The Hebrew Bible, Bible translations, Semitics (specifically Classical Hebrew and Aramaic), Jewish mysticism, and magic and witchcraft in biblical & post-biblical times.
