Jonathan completed his PhD at Harvard University in 2012, specializing in Japanese history and in historical ethnomusicology. He studies the transformation in musical culture and the evolution of the "soundscape" in Japan during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. After graduating, he worked as a Research Associate at the Japan Research Centre at SOAS.
Jonathan is working on his first monograph, Orchestrating Modernity. He is also the editor of the SOAS Occasional Translations in Japanese Studies and has received funding from the British Association for Japanese Studies to host a translation workshop in the 2014-15 academic year focusing on the history of the senses.
