Professor Pascal Menoret (Brandeis University) appointed to Khalid bin Abdullah al Saud Professorship for the Study of the Contemporary Arab World

The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Pascal Menoret as the new Khalid bin Abdullah al Saud Professor for the Study of the Contemporary Arab World in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.

Professor Menoret is the Renée and Lester Crown Professor of Modern Middle East Studies at Brandeis University. On leave from Brandeis University at the moment, he is the director of the Center for Economic, Legal, and Social Studies and Documentation in Cairo (CEDEJ). He also taught at Princeton University and New York University Abu Dhabi. He earned his BA in Philosophy from the University of Provence and his MA in Middle East Studies from the Institut des Langues et Civilisations Orientales in Paris. He completed his PhD in History in 2008 from the University of Paris (Panthéon-Sorbonne).

Professor Menoret is the author of four books on Saudi Arabia, including The Saudi Enigma: A History, L'Arabie, des routes de l'encens à l'ère du pétrole, and Joyriding in Riyadh: Oil, Urbanism and Road Revolt. His latest book, Graveyard of Clerics: Everyday Activism in Saudi Arabia, came out in 2020 at Stanford University Press. 

Professor Menoret will begin his appointment at the University of Oxford in September 2024, where he will be a fellow of Magdalen College.
