Turkish is the official language of the Republic of Turkey and one of the official languages of the Republic of Cyprus. It is a recognised minority language in a variety of European countries, including Croatia, Bosnia, Greece, North Macedonia and Romania.

Turkish is one of the main subjects taught within the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. Undergraduate students pursuing a BA Honours degree in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies may study Turkish either on its own or in combination with an additional language. Undergraduate students may also combine Turkish with a European language through the European and Middle Eastern Languages joint degree.

At graduate level, Turkish is also taught intensively as part of the MPhil in Islamic Studies and History and the MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies.
